Locality 170, Bed 14 [Makatini Fm] (Cretaceous of South Africa)

Where: South Africa (27.2° S, 32.2° E: paleocoordinates 44.7° S, 1.5° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Makatini Formation, Late/Upper Barremian (130.0 - 125.5 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Makatini Fm, which is regionally overlain by the Mzinene Fm. THICKNESS: From a 20 cm thick bed within ~30 m section. AGE: Barremian 1 based on ammonite biostratigraphy (Acroceras zone). STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From concretions in the middle part of the section, upper part of the river cliff.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, concretionary, shelly/skeletal siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No detailed environmental data reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Shelly concretions with abundant molluscs, assumed to be siltstone on the basis of surrounding lithologies. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of facies descriptions of adjacent beds, and figures from subsequent publications (e.g. Kennedy and Kinger 1977).

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: concretion
