Taxonomy

Mammalia was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was reranked as the unranked clade Mammalia by Säve-Söderbergh (1934), Gauthier et al. (1989), Flynn et al. (1999) and Rowe et al. (2008).

It was assigned to Dicondylia by Haeckel (1866); to Reptiliomorpha by Säve-Söderbergh (1934); to Cynodontia by Gauthier et al. (1989); to Vertebrata by Case (1904), Hay (1930), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Shoshani et al. (1989); to Synapsida by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Holotheria by Flynn et al. (1999); to Chordata by Barnes (1998) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Mammaliaformes by Wible (1991), Luo et al. (2003) and Rowe et al. (2008).

Synonyms

Aquila antiqua was named by Shufeldt (1913). Its type specimen is A. M. 5163, a limb element (claw), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Church Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Minerva antiqua by Shufeldt (1915) and Wetmore (1921); it was considered a nomen dubium by Wetmore (1933).
Aquila ferox was named by Shufeldt (1913). Its type specimen is A. M. 5164, a limb element (nearly complete claw), and it is not a trace fossil.

Florentinoameghinia mystica was named by Simpson (1932). Its type specimen is AMNH 28402, a set of teeth (P4-M1/), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Oficina del Diablo, which is in a Casamayoran terrestrial horizon in the Casamayor Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Florentinoameghinia.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Domning (2001).
Australosphenida was named by Luo et al. (2001). It is extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Luo et al. (2011).
