Prokennalestes was named by Kielan-Jaworowska and Dashzeveg (1989) [replaces Prokennalestes Trofimov in Beliajeva et al. 1974 (nomen nudum)]. Its type is Prokennalestes trofimovi.
It was assigned to Kennalestidae by Averianov and Skutschas (2000); to Eutheria by Wible et al. (2001); to Otlestidae by Kielan-Jaworowska and Dashzeveg (1989) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Boreosphenida by Martin and Rauhut (2005).
