Sarcolestes was named by Lydekker (1893). It was considered monophyletic by Vickaryous et al. (2004).
It was synonymized subjectively with Scelidosaurus by Romer (1956) and Romer (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Lexovisaurus by Kuhn (1964); it was considered a nomen dubium by Carpenter (2001).
It was assigned to Thecodontosauridae by Lydekker (1893); to Omosauridae by Huene (1909); to Stegosauridae by von Zittel (1911) and Swinton (1970); to Ankylosauria by Vickaryous et al.
