It was assigned to Clepsydropidae by Cope (1878) and Cope (1888); to Clepsydropinae by Case (1907); to Sphenacodontia by Olson (1966); to Sphenacodontinae by Berman (1977) and Reisz (1986); and to Sphenacodontidae by Romer (1936), Daly (1973), Carroll (1988), Berman et al. (2001) and Martens et al. (2005).
