Amphicoelias was named by Cope (1877). Its type is Amphicoelias altus. It is the type genus of Amphicoeliidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Morosaurus by Sauvage (1880); it was synonymized subjectively with Camarasaurus by Sauvage (1882), Marsh (1895), Marsh (1896) and Marsh (1898).
