Macelognathus was named by Marsh (1884). It is the type genus of Macelognathidae.
It was assigned to Coeluridae by Baur (1891); to Macelognathidae by Marsh (1884) and Hay (1902); to Ornithischia by Huene (1909); to Stegosauridae by von Zittel (1911); to Hypsilophodontidae by Kuhn (1964) and Romer (1966); to Crocodilia by Ostrom (1971); and to Sphenosuchia by Gohlich et al. (2005).
