Palaeosauriscidae was named by Kuhn (1959). Its type is Palaeosauriscus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ornithosuchidae by Steel (1970); it was synonymized subjectively with Anchisauridae by Galton (1973) and Heerden (1979).

It was assigned to Teratosauria by Colbert (1970).
