Taxonomy

Formicidae was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant.

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Cockerell (1921); to Formicoidea by Rasnitsyn (1975), Hong (1983) and Hong and Wang (1985); to Apocrita by Carpenter (1992); and to Vespoidea by Brothers (1999), Wappler (2003) and Sharkey (2007).

Synonyms

Ponera elongatula was named by Heer (1849). It is an impression. Its type locality is Radoboj (unspecified or Heer coll), which is in a Burdigalian lacustrine limestone in Croatia.

It was recombined as Poneropsis elongatula by Heer (1867); it was considered a nomen dubium by Taylor (1964).
Gesomyrmex miegi was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Bale Museum R 75, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Kleinkembs, which is in an Oligocene lacustrine - large marl/limestone in the Salt Formation of France.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Dlussky et al. (2009) and Bolton (2012).
Ponera minuta was named by Donisthorpe (1920). Its type specimen is BMNH I.9734, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bembridge Marls (Brodie & A'Court Smith coll), which is in a Priabonian wet floodplain lime mudstone in the Bouldnor Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Bolton (2012).
Plagiolepis succini was named by André (1895). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is East Africa Copal (Pougnet coll), which is in a Holocene terrestrial amber in Tanzania.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Dlussky (2010).
Formicoidea was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Formicidae by Brothers (1999).

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Dlussky (1983); and to Apocrita by Rasnitsyn (1975), Hong (1983) and Hong and Wang (1985).
