Taxonomy

Iridomyrmex was named by Mayr (1862). It is extant.

It was assigned to Tapinomini by Wheeler (1915); to Dolichoderinae by Zhang (1989); and to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992).

Synonyms

Iridomyrmex mapesi was named by Wilson (1985). Its type specimen is MCZ, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Claiborne amber, Malvern, which is in a Lutetian terrestrial amber in the Claiborne Formation of Arkansas.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011) and Bolton (2012).
Iridomyrmex breviantennis was named by Theobald (1937). Its type specimen is Bale Museum R 484(10), an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Kleinkembs, which is in an Oligocene lacustrine - large marl/limestone in the Salt Formation of France.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011) and Bolton (2012).
Iridomyrmex shandongicus was named by Zhang (1989). Its type specimen is 830127, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Shanwang, Linqu County, collection 3, which is in a Miocene lacustrine - large mudstone in the Shanwang Formation of China.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011) and Bolton (2012).
Iridomyrmex florissantius was named by Carpenter (1930). Its type specimen is MCZ 2872, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (MCZ Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

Iridomyrmex obscurans was named by Carpenter (1930). Its type specimen is USNM 78799, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Florissant (USNM Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heterick and Shattuck (2011) and Bolton (2012).
