Cetotherium (Cetotheriophanes) was named by Brandt (1873). It was considered monophyletic by Uhen (2015).
It was synonymized subjectively with Cetotherium by Lydekker (1887); it was synonymized subjectively with Balaenoptera by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was considered a nomen dubium by Kellogg (1931); it was reranked as Cetotheriophanes by Demere et al. (2005) and Uhen (2015).
It was assigned to Cetotherium by Brandt (1873) and Palmer (1904); and to Balaenopteridae by Demere et al. (2005) and Uhen (2015).
