Mastodonsaurus was named by Jaeger (1828). It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (1999).
It was synonymized subjectively with Labyrinthodon by Owen (1861); it was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965).
It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Meyer (1845); to Capitosauroidea by Yates and Warren (2000); to Mastodonsauridae by Carroll (1988), Schoch (1999) and Damiani (2001); and to Capitosauroidea by Schoch (2013).
