Parareptilia was named by Olson (1947) [Whether the taxon is extinct or not depends on exlusion or inclusion of turtles, respectively.]. It was considered monophyletic by Laurin and Reisz (1995).
It was reranked as the unranked clade Parareptilia by Gauthier et al. (1988), Laurin and Reisz (1995), Gow (2000), Modesto and Damiani (2003) and Martens et al. (2005).
It was assigned to Reptilia by Olson (1947) and Olson (1962); to Amniota by Gauthier et al. (1988); and to Reptilia by Laurin and Reisz (1995), Gow (2000), Modesto and Damiani (2003) and Martens et al. (2005).
