Taxonomy

Archosauria was named by Cope (1870) ["great order"]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Thies et al. (1997) and Nesbitt (2011).

It was reranked as the subclass Archosauria by Haughton and Brink (1954), Thulborn (1975), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Thies et al. (1997); it was reranked as the infraclass Archosauria by Olson (1966) and Olshevsky (1992); it was reranked as the class Archosauria by Bakker (1986); it was reranked as the unranked clade Archosauria by Gauthier et al. (1989), Parrish (1993), Long and Murry (1995) and Nesbitt (2011).

It was assigned to Diapsida by Olson (1947); to Diapsida by Bakker (1986); to Diapsida by Olson (1966) and Olshevsky (1992); to Archosauriformes by Gauthier et al. Synonyms

Strigosuchus licinus was named by Simmons (1965). Its type specimen is FMNH CUP 2082, a mandible, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Tati, Lufeng (CUP), which is in a Sinemurian terrestrial horizon in the Lufeng Formation of China.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Luo and Wu (1994).
Avesuchia was named by Benton (1999). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Archosauria by Nesbitt (2011).
Strigosuchus was named by Simmons (1965).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Luo and Wu (1994).

It was assigned to Ornithosuchidae by Simmons (1965); and to Thecodontia by Carroll (1988).
Avalonia sanfordi was named by Seeley (1898). Its type specimen is BMNH R2780, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wedmore Hill, which is in a Rhaetian terrestrial limestone in the Westbury Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Avalonia, Avalonianus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Gresslyosaurus ingens by Huene (1908); it was recombined as Avalonianus sanfordi by Kuhn (1961) and Steel (1970); it was considered a nomen dubium by Heerden (1979), Storrs (1993), Galton (1998) and Naish and Martill (2007).
Avalonianus was named by Kuhn (1961). Its type is Avalonia sanfordi.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Galton (1998) and Naish and Martill (2007).

It was assigned to Melanorosauridae by Steel (1970).
Picrodon was named by Seeley (1898). Its type is Picrodon herveyi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Gresslyosaurus by Huene (1902), Huene (1905), Huene (1908), Romer (1956) and Romer (1966); it was considered a nomen dubium by Heerden (1979); it was considered a nomen dubium by Galton (1998) and Naish and Martill (2007).

It was assigned to Ornithosuchidae by Steel (1970); and to Teratosauridae by Battail (1986).
Picrodon herveyi was named by Seeley (1898). Its type specimen is BMNH R.2875, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wedmore Hill, which is in a Rhaetian terrestrial limestone in the Westbury Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Picrodon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Gresslyosaurus ingens by Huene (1908); it was considered a nomen dubium by Heerden (1979), Storrs (1993), Galton (1998) and Naish and Martill (2007).
Megalosaurus terquemi was named by Huene (1926). Its type locality is Hettange, which is in a Hettangian marginal marine sandstone in France.

It was recombined as Gresslyosaurus terquemi by Lapparent (1967); it was considered a nomen dubium by Buffetaut et al. (1991), Carrano and Sampson (2004), Holtz et al. (2004) and Carrano et al. (2012).
Agrestipus was named by Weems (1987). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Lockley et al. (1995); it was synonymized subjectively with Brachychirotherium by Weems (2006).

It was assigned to Sauropoda by Weems (1987); and to Prosauropoda by Weishampel (2006).
Agrestipus hottoni was named by Weems (1987). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is USNM 358653, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Culpeper Crushed Stone Quarry (upper), which is in a Lacian/Alaunian lacustrine - large shale/mudstone in the Bull Run Formation of Virginia.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Lockley et al. (1995); it was synonymized subjectively with Brachychirotherium parvum by Weems (2006).
