Brachiopods of the Punta Negra Formation, Rio de las Chacritas section30 (Devonian of Argentina)

Where: Argentina (30.5° S, 68.5° W: paleocoordinates 60.7° S, 114.1° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Punta Negra Formation, Late/Upper Emsian (402.5 - 391.9 Ma)

• "In spite of the provisional identification of most of this scarce material, it allows us to substantiate an Early Devonian age (probably latest Emsian) for the lower part of the Punta Negra Formation." Collection is from 250 m above base of formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; bioturbated, gray, green sandstone and shale

• Precordillera. Paleoenvironment interpreted as "thick siliciclastic deltaic unit."
• green-gray sandstones (collection level). Section (figure 2) shows dominant sandstones, also shales and conglomerates, with planar lamination, hummocky cross beds, bioturbation, traces, plant remains and other features.
