GS176, GS933 & GS 3894 - Incholme Mbr, Tapui Glauconitic Sandstone, Black Point (Eocene of New Zealand)

Also known as S127/f520; Coll# 3008 (Hendy PhD)

Where: New Zealand (44.9° S, 170.8° E: paleocoordinates 52.3° S, 168.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Tapui Glauconitic Sandstone Formation (Tokarahi Group), Bartonian (40.4 - 37.2 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From Incholme Glauconitic Sand Mbr of the Tapui Glauconitic Sand Fm, immediately overlying the Kauru Fm (Teurian), and overlain locally by Raki Siltstone (Kaiatan). AGE: upper Bortonian of Gage (1957) = Bartonian. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From upper member within the formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, fine-grained, glauconitic, micaceous, calcareous, carbonaceous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Deposited in still water beyond reach of strong wave action.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Fine calcareous micaceous sand, with fine glauconite and unusually fine, disseminated carbonaceous material. LITHIFICATION: Presumably lithified, based on facies description (detailed in Gage 1957), taphonomy, and age.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: cast, mold/impression, concretion

Reposited in the IGNS

Collection methods: quarrying,

• COLLECTOR: Collected by various authors, which may include: Marwick (1924-1944), Laws (1930-1941), and Powell (1942). REPOSITORY: New Zealand Geological Survey (now GNS Science, Lower Hutt, New Zealand).
