Nostoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 971]. It is the type genus of Nostoceratidae.
It was assigned to Nostoceratidae by Kennedy (1986), Kennedy and Summesberger (1987), Kennedy and Christensen (1991), Henderson et al. (1992), Kennedy and Cobban (1993), Kennedy (1993), Kennedy and Cobban (1994) and Kennedy et al. (2000); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
