Delphinus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Delphinus delphis. It was considered monophyletic by Geisler et al. (2011).

Delphinus pernettensis was named by Blainville (1817) [Name based on dolphin described and figured by Pernetty (1764). No type specimen designated (Hershkovitz, 1966).]. It is extant. Its type locality is Albrolhos Bank, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in Brazil.

It was corrected as Delphinus pernettyi by Desmarest (1822); it was recombined as Stenella pernettyi by Hershkovitz (1966); it was considered a nomen oblitum by Zoological Nomenclature (1977).
Eudelphinus tasmaniensis was named by Van Beneden and Gervais (1880). It is extant. Its type specimen is MNHN CAC: A.3071, a skull.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Heyning and Perrin (1994).
