Sorex was named by Linnaeus (1758) [type European S. araneus]. It is extant. Its type is Sorex araneus.

It was assigned to Bestiae by Linnaeus (1758); to Soricina by Gray (1825); to Soricini by Van Valen (1967) and George (1986); and to Soricidae by Carroll (1988), Shoshani et al. (1989), Seymour (2004) and Silcox et al. (2010).
