Hylobates was named by Illiger (1811). It is extant. It is the type genus of Hylobatidae.
It was assigned to Quadrumana by Illiger (1811); to Simiina by Gray (1825); to Hylobatidae by Andrews and Cronin (1982), McKenna and Bell (1997), Mootnick and Groves (2005) and Thinh et al. (2010); and to Hominoidea by Zalmout et al. (2010).
