Ictitherium was named by Wagner (1848). It is not extant. Its type is Ictitherium viverrinum. It is the type genus of Ictitheriinae.
It was assigned to Ictitheriinae by Ginsburg (1977); and to Hyaenidae by Kurtén (1982) and Carroll (1988).
