Taxonomy

Platygonus was named by Leconte (1848) [originally spelled Platigonus].

It was assigned to Tayassuidae by Le Conte (1848), Gidley (1920), Hoare et al. (1964) and Carroll (1988); and to Tayassuinae by McKenna and Bell (1997).

Hyops was named by Leconte (1848). Its type is Hyops depressifrons.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dicotyles by Leidy (1857); it was synonymized subjectively with Platygonus by Simpson (1949), Slaughter (1966) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
Euchoerus was named by Leidy (1853).

It was synonymized subjectively with Dicotyles by Leidy (1857) and Leidy (1860); it was synonymized subjectively with Platygonus by Simpson (1949) and Slaughter (1966).
Protochoerus was named by Leconte (1848).

It was synonymized subjectively with Platygonus by McKenna and Bell (1997).
