Taxonomy
Anthracotheriidae was named by Leidy (1869) [also attributed to Gill 1872]. It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Boisserie et al. (2005).
It was considered an invalid subgroup of Ruminantiamorpha by Spaulding et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Suina by Flower and Lydekker (1891); to Artiodactyla by Cope (1889) and Andrews (1906); to Nonruminantia by Gregory (1910); to Suina by Anyonge (1991); to Ancodonta by Montgelard et al. (1997); to Anthracotherioidea by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Artiodactyla by Pilgrim (1940) and Sach and Heizmann (2001); to Anthracotheriodea by Boisserie et al. (2005); and to Hippopotamoidea by Sahni and Khare (1971), Carroll (1988), Boisserie et al. (2010) and Boisserie et al. (2011).
