Taxonomy

Gryllidae was named by Laicharting (1781). It is extant.

It was assigned to Orthoptera by Cockerell (1921) and Haughton (1924); to Ensifera by Zeuner (1939); to Saltatoria by Bode (1953); to Gryllidea by Sharov (1968) and Whalley (1985); and to Grylloidea by Gorochov et al. (2006).

Synonyms

Gryllites vocalis was named by Cockerell (1936). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is AMNH 24523, a tegmen (part of male tegmen), and it is an impression.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner (1939).
Pronemobius induratus was named by Scudder (1890). Its type specimen is Packard 136, a set of appendages (part of tegmen & 2 hind legs), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Green River (Packard Collection), which is in a Bridgerian lacustrine - large diatomite/shale in the Green River Formation of Wyoming.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner (1939).
Gryllites dubius was named by Germar (1849).

Gryllus troglodytes was named by Heer (1865). It is a cast.

It was recombined as Nemobius troglodytes by Handlirsch (1907); it was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner (1939).
Gryllus fuchsi was named by Handlirsch (1907). It is a compression fossil.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner (1939).
Proanaxipha bicolorata was named by Vickery and Poinar (1994). Its type specimen is LEM 10946, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (Lyman Museum collection), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Heads et al. (2012).
