Caprinae was named by Gray (1821) [also attributed to Gill 1872]. It is extant.
It was reranked as the tribe Caprini by Hassanin and Douzery (1999) and Hassanin and Douzery (2003).
It was assigned to Antilopinae by Hassanin and Douzery (1999) and Hassanin and Douzery (2003); and to Bovidae by Gill (1872), Alcala and Morales (1997), Mead and Taylor (2005) and Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008).
