Plateosaurus longiceps

Taxonomy

Plateosaurus longiceps was named by Jaekel (1913) [syntype series]. Its type specimen is HMN MB.R.1937 (= XXIV), I, XXV, a skeleton, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Baerecke-Limpricht clay pit, Halberstadt (bed 18), which is in a Rhaetian floodplain claystone/sandstone in the Trossingen Formation of Germany.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus quenstedti by Huene (1932) and Steel (1970); it was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus engelhardti by Galton (1984).

Synonyms

Plateosaurus trossingensis was named by Fraas (1913). Its type specimen is SMNS 13200, a skeleton, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Trossingen - lower Plateosaurus bonebed, which is in a Norian floodplain mudstone in the Löwenstein Formation of Germany.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus integer by Huene (1915) and Fraas (1915); it was replaced with Plateosaurus fraasianus by Steel (1970); it was considered a nomen nudum by Galton (1984); it was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus longiceps by Galton (2001) and Galton and Upchurch (2004).
Plateosaurus fraasianus was named by Huene (1932). Its type specimen is SMNS 13200, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus engelhardti by Galton (1984) and Galton (1985); it was synonymized objectively with Plateosaurus trossingensis by Galton (2001) and Galton (2001); it was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus longiceps by Galton and Upchurch (2004).
Plateosaurus integer was named by Fraas (1915).
