Stegosaurus stenops was named by Marsh (1887). Its type specimen is USNM 4934, a skeleton, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Felch Quarry 1, Garden Park (YPM), which is in a Kimmeridgian/Tithonian channel sandstone/claystone in the Morrison Formation of Colorado.
Stegosaurus duplex was named by Marsh (1887). Its type specimen is YPM 1858 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Reed's Quarry 11, Como Bluff (YPM), which is in a Kimmeridgian/Tithonian wet floodplain mudstone in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming.
