Taxonomy

Cochlioceras was named by Eichwald (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llde Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. Its type is Cochlioceras avus. It is the type genus of Baltoceratidae.

It was assigned to Baltoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger and Evans (2011).

Baltoceras was named by Holm (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. It is not extant. Its type is Endoceras burchardii.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cochlioceras by Evans (2005).

It was assigned to Orthoceratidae by Holm (1897); to Baltoceratidae by Flower (1964); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
