Rioceras was named by Flower (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. It is not extant. Its type is Rioceras nondescriptum. It is the type genus of Rioceratidae.
It was assigned to Baltoceratidae by Hook and Flower (1977); and to Rioceratidae by Kröger and Evans (2011).
