Chanaresuchus was named by Romer (1971). It is not extant. Its type is Chanaresuchus bonapartei.
It was assigned to Proterochampsidae by Romer (1971), Cruickshank (1978), Carroll (1988), Benton (1990), Parrish (1993) and Nesbitt et al. (2009); and to Proterochampsia by Nesbitt (2011).
