Vectisuchus was named by Buffetaut and Hutt (1980).
It was assigned to Goniophididae by Carroll (1988); to Elosuchidae by Andrade et al. (2011); and to Goniopholididae by Buffetaut and Hutt (1980), Lauprasert et al. (2007) and Bronzati et al. (2012).
