Taxonomy

Merychyus was named by Leidy (1858). It is not extant. Its type is Merychyus elegans.

It was assigned to Merycoidodontidae by Leidy (1858) and Lander (1998); and to Merychyinae by Parris and Grandstaff (2003).

Metoreodon was named by Cook (1912) [named as a subgenus of Merychyus by Matthew and Cook 1909; raised to genus level].

It was synonymized subjectively with Merychyus by Schultz and Falkenbach (1941), Schultz and Falkenbach (1947), Skinner et al. (1977) and Lander (1998).
Ustatochoerus was named by Schultz and Falkenbach (1941).

It was synonymized subjectively with Merychyus by Lander (1998).
