Eotheroides was named by Palmer (1899) [replacement name for Eotherium Owen, 1875].
It was assigned to Halicoridae by Trouessart (1904); to Halitheriidae by Palmer (1904); to Prorastomidae by Simpson (1932); to Eotherioidinae by Kretzoi (1941); to Prorastominae by Reinhart (1959); to Eotheroididae by Heal (1973); to Dugongidae by Carroll (1988); to Halitheriinae by Domning (1994), Domning (1996) and Samonds and Zalmout (2009); and to Halitheriinae by Zalmout and Gingerich (2012).
