Taxonomy
Scelidotherium was named by Owen (1839). It is the type genus of Scelidotheriinae.
It was assigned to Mylomorpha by Cope (1889); to Megatheriidae by Lydekker (1894); to Scelidotheriidae by Paula Couto (1956); to Mylodontidae by Carroll (1988); and to Scelidotheriinae by Hoffstetter (1954), Gaudin (1995) and Zurita et al. (2004).
