Felis onca was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Panthera onca by Kurten and Anderson (1980), Jefferson (1991) and Johnson et al. (2006).

Synonyms

Felis augustus was named by Leidy (1872) [Morgan and Seymour 1997 give no opinion]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Panthera onca augusta by Simpson (1941) and Slaughter (1966); it was recombined as Panthera (Jaguarius) augusta by McCrady et al. (1954); it was synonymized subjectively with Panthera onca by Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Seymour (1993).
Felis veronis was named by Hay (1919).

It was synonymized subjectively with Panthera (Jaguarius) augusta by McCrady et al. (1954); it was synonymized subjectively with Panthera onca by Simpson (1941) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
