Miohippus obliquidens

Taxonomy

Mesohippus obliquidens was named by Osborn (1904). Its type locality is Middle Oreodon Beds (1892 AMNH Collection), which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the Brule Formation of South Dakota.

It was synonymized subjectively with Mesohippus bairdi by Sinclair (1924); it was recombined as Miohippus obliquidens by Prothero and Shubin (1989).

It was recombined as Mesohippus meteulophus by Gregory (1920), Hay (1930), Stirton (1940), Scott (1941) and Macdonald (1951); it was synonymized subjectively with Miohippus obliquidens by Prothero and Shubin (1989).
Pediohippus antiquus was named by Schlaikjer (1935) [genotype]. Its type locality is Harvard Fossil Reserve (Main Level), which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the "Brule" Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Pediohippus.

It was recombined as Mesohippus antiquus by Stirton (1940); it was recombined as Miohippus antiquus by Forsten (1974); it was synonymized subjectively with Miohippus obliquidens by Prothero and Shubin (1989).
