Aeluroidea was named by Flower (1869). It is extant.

It was assigned to Carnivora by Flower (1883) and Carroll (1988); and to Feliformia by Bryant (1991).

Stenoplesictinae was named by Schlosser (1923). It is not extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Aeluroidea by Hunt (1989) and Hunt (1998); it was reranked as the family Stenoplesictidae by Morlo et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Feliformia by Morlo et al. (2007).
