Basic information
Sample name: North Fork of Owl Creek (UW V-78004)
Reference: J. G. Eaton. 1985. Paleontology and correlation of the Eocene Tepee Trail and Wiggins Formations in the North Fork of Owl Creek area, southeastern Absaroka Range, Hot Springs County, Wyoming. Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology 5(4):345-370 [ER 4126]
Geography
Country: United States
State: Wyoming
County: Hot Springs
Coordinate: 43.78° N, -109.11° W
Coordinate basis: estimated from map
Formation: Tepee Trail
Time interval: Middle Eocene
Zone: Uintan
Section: Owl Creek
Unit number: 1
Unit order: below to above
Max Ma: 47.76
Min Ma: 46.235
Age basis: paleomag
Geography comments: northeast of Washakie Needles near the upper reaches of the North Fork of Owl Creek
from the "Holy City beds" in the lower Tepee Trail Formation, which "appears to be transitional between" the Bridgerian and early Uintan and "may be equivalent" to Uinta A
near the top of a normal zone said to be within "the Anomaly 21 Chron"
Eaton apparently means chron 21n, but this interval is much younger than a K-Ar date of 52.5 ± 2.7 Ma "from the upper part of the Tepee Trail Formation"
based on stratigraphically close date of 46.0 ± 1.7 Ma for the immediately overlying lower Wiggins Formation, I believe that the overlying reversed zone is actually chron c20r and that the K-Ar date is erroneous, which is consistent with an age of c21n for the fauna (basis of age assignment)
c21n is early Lutetian and early Middle Eocene
