Paul's Locality
Basic information
Sample name: Paul's Locality
Sample aka: UMNH VP Locality 10
Reference: J. G. Eaton, S. Diem, J. D. Archibald, C. Schierup, and H. Munk. 1999. Vertebrate paleontology of the Upper Cretaceous rocks of the Markagunt Plateau, southwestern Utah. Utah Geological Survey Miscellaneous Publication 99-1:323-333 [ER 4139]
Geography
Country: United States
State: Utah
County: Iron
Coordinate: 37.63° N, -112.89° W
Coordinate basis: estimated from map
Time interval: Santonian
Geography comments: within Cedar Canyon "along the western margin of the Markagunt Plateau... east of Cedar City" (coordinate based on FIg. 1)
21 meters above a conglomerate that "appears to represent the uppermost member of the Straight Cliffs Formation" so the fossiliferous level "should be equivalent to the Wahweap Formation"
compared "most closely" to the Aquilan land mammal age and possibly correlated with the Wahweap Formation, which is thought be Campanian, "but Nichol's (1997) palynomorph study suggests that Locality 10 is well within the Santonian"

Environment
Lithology: siliciclastic (mixed)
Taphonomic context: fluvial deposit
Habitat comments: a within "600 meters of lithologically similar fluvial deposits" that "consist of variegated mudstones and channel sandstones"
Methods
Life forms: other small mammals
Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash
Sample size: 45 specimens
Years: 1991, 1992, 1996
Museum: Utah Museum of Natural History
Sampling comments: this locality and/or others reported in the paper were discovered by Eaton in 1991, who "was joined by Archibald during the 1992 field season... Schierup joined... during the 1996 field season"
the acknowledgements section mentions "quarrying and matrix processing", presumably at this locality and presumably meaning screening
fishes, turtles, lizards, and dinosaurs are also listed but not described
