Bloom Basin (BADL-LOC-0293)
Basic information
Sample name: Bloom Basin (BADL-LOC-0293)
Reference: C. A. Boyd and E. Welsh. 2014. Description of an earliest Orellan fauna from Badlands National Park, Interior, South Dakota and implications for the stratigraphic position of the Bloom Basin limestone bed. Dakoterra 6(124):147 [ER 4140]
Geography
Country: United States
State: South Dakota
County: Jackson
Coordinate: 43.86° N, -102.18° W
Coordinate basis: estimated from map
Time interval: Early Oligocene
Zone: Orellan
Max Ma: 33.9
Min Ma: 33.726
Age basis: paleomag
Geography comments: "entirely within" Badlands National Park "immediately adjacent to the fence line... within the southern edge of the Bloom Basin along the park's northern boundary" and within the park's north unit (coordinate estimated from a map of the park)
"about three meters" below "the Bloom Basin limestone bed' that had previously been taken to be the "top of the Chadron formation", but the authors also suggest that the fossil stratum might be "within the Scenic Member of the Brule Formation"
in any event, the horizon is so close to the Chadronian-Orellan transition that it is presumably within chron C13r (basis of minimum age assignment using the C13r-C13n value of Ogg 2020) but younger than the Eocene-Oligocene boundary (basis of maximum)
"the earliest Orellan local fauna described from the Big Badlands"

Environment
Lithology: not described
Methods
Life forms: carnivores,rodents,ungulates,other small mammals,snakes,turtles
Sampling methods: screenwash
Sample size: 73 specimens
Sampling comments: "Most fossils... were collected as float specimens... though a few specimens (i.e., BADL 63554) were only partially exposed and remained in situ. No quarrying took place at this locality... Bulk matrix removed during the excavation of a rhinocerotid skull (BADL 63554) during this study was retained and processed for microvertebrate fossils" by soaking and sieving
undescribed "Lacertilia indet." and two bird eggshell specimens are also present
