Basic information
Sample name: Sand Wash (Locality 3)
Reference: R. M. West and M. R. Dawson. 1975. Eocene fossil Mammalia from the Sand Wash Basin, northwestern Moffat County, Colorado. Annals of Carnegie Museum 45(11):231-253 [ER 4153]
Geography
Country: United States
State: Colorado
County: Moffat
Coordinate: 40.67° N, -108.42° W
Coordinate basis: estimated from map
Formation: Washakie
Time interval: Middle Eocene
Zone: Uintan
Geography comments: shown in Fig. 2 to be in the northwest quarter of secn. 9, T 8 N, R 98 W
from somewhere above the Robin's Egg Blue Tuff according to Stucky et al. (1996)
thought to be "on the Bridgerian-Uintan boundary" by West and Dawson and earliest Uintan or Shoshonian by Stucky et al. (1996)
Sutcky et al. (1996) are unable to correlate the zones represented by magnetic polarity data for the Sand Wash Basin with certainty, but in any event, their sections do not include Locality 3

Environment
Lithology: not described
Habitat comments: in the southeastern part of the basin yielding the fauna, "the sediment seems considerably finer, shows relatively less channelling, and floodplain and lacustrine sediments are predominant"
"deposited in a margial lacustrine-fluvial setting" according to Stucky et al. (1996)

Sampling comments: Dawson opened the locality in 1961; it was revisited by the CM and AMNH in 1963; by the CM in 1964; and by West, Dawson, and M. C. McKenna in 1972
AMNH specimens are not described if there are any, and UCM specimens from this locality are also described
