Geography comments: The Gratkorn locality is situated in St. Stephan clay pit 700 m outside Gratkorn and 10 km NNW of Graz, Austria

The palaeosol has been dated to 12.2 - 12 Ma in the late Sarmatian of the Middle Miocene using "integrated stratigraphy"

Taphonomic context: paleosol

Habitat comments: The Gratkorn remains originate from a single fine-grained clastic soil layer (55 cm) which has been interpreted as a "floodplain palaeosol"

The uniformity of the palaeosol and quality of preservation indicates a rapid accumulation at the site, within "a few decades"
