Lage Grande Paleontological Site
Basic information
Sample name: Lage Grande Paleontological Site

Reference: H. I. de Araùjo-Jùnior, K. O. Porpino, and L. P. Bergqvist. 2013. Taphonomic analysis of a late Pleistocene vertebrate accumulation from Lage Grande Paleontological Site, Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil: New remarks on preservational aspects of tank deposits. Quaternary International 317:88-101 [ER 3396]
Geography
Country: Brazil

State: Pernambuco

Coordinate: 8° 25' 27" S, 36° 43' 20" W
Coordinate basis: stated in text

Time interval: Late Pleistocene

Geography comments: in Alagoinha municipality "7 km north from Alagoinha City"
said to be late Pleistocene, presumably based on faunal content

Environment
Lithology: sandstone

Taphonomic context: lake deposit

Habitat comments: "tank deposits... The lowermost facies consists of unsorted fossiliferous sandstone (about 3 m thick) composed of angular and subangular quartz grains. This facies overlies the basement rock which forms the floor of the tank. The uppermost lithofacies is an unfossiliferous matrix-supported conglomerate about 1 m thick without any macrofossils... a parautochthonous assemblage that experienced a short time span of subaerial exposure prior to burial and short-distance transport to inside the tanks, unleashed by debris-flows"
the deposit "is pond-like, unlike most other tank deposits"

Methods
Life forms: ungulates, other large mammals, other reptiles

Sampling methods: quarry

Sample size: 230 specimens

Years: 1938 - 1940

Sampling comments: "excavated from 1938 to 1940 and studied by Vidal, 1946, Vidal, 1955, Vidal, 1959... Two tanks were excavated from 1938 to 1940, however, as they are adjacent, they were here considered as a single fossil accumulation"
