Basic information
Sample name: Gratkorn

Reference: M. Aiglstorfer, H. Bocherens, and M. Bohme. 2014. Large mammal ecology in the late Middle Miocene Gratkorn locality (Austria). Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments 94:189-213 [ER 3897]
Geography
Country: Austria

State: Styria

Coordinate: 47.137222° N, 15.348889° E
Coordinate basis: estimated from map

Time interval: Middle Miocene

Max Ma: 12.2

Min Ma: 12

Age basis: other

Geography comments: The Gratkorn locality is situated in St. Stephan clay pit 700 m outside Gratkorn and 10 km NNW of Graz, Austria

The palaeosol has been dated to 12.2 - 12 Ma in the late Sarmatian of the Middle Miocene using "integrated stratigraphy"

Environment
Lithology: siliciclastic (mixed)

Taphonomic context: paleosol

Habitat comments: The Gratkorn remains originate from a single fine-grained clastic soil layer (55 cm) which has been interpreted as a "floodplain palaeosol"

The uniformity of the palaeosol and quality of preservation indicates a rapid accumulation at the site, within "a few decades"

Methods
Life forms: ungulates,other small mammals

Sampling methods: quarry

Sample size: 56 specimens

Sampling comments: Analyses were performed on tooth enamel to establish diet and mobility trends in the area
All specimens listed are tooth specimens
JA: the small mammals were described by Prieto et al. (2014), but no counts or lists of specimens were provided
