Rock Bench Quarry
Basic information
Sample name: Rock Bench Quarry

Reference: G. L. Jepsen. 1940. Paleocene faunas of the Polecat Bench Formation, Park County, Wyoming: Part I. Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society 83(2):217-340 [ER 4104]
Geography
Country: United States

State: Wyoming

County: Park

Coordinate: 44.88° N, -108.75° W
Coordinate basis: stated in text

Scale: quarry

Formation: Polecat Bench

Time interval: Early Palaeocene

Zone: Torrejonian

Section: Polecat Bench

Unit number: 1

Unit order: below to above

Max Ma: 63.537

Min Ma: 62.53

Age basis: paleomag

Geography comments: "occurs about two hundred feet above the base of the Polecat Bench formation and about seventy feet above the top of the Mantua lentil in sec. 36, T. 57 R. 99 W"
chron 27R according to Butler et al. (1987) (age assignment based on Ogg 2020)

Environment
Lithology: sandstone

Taphonomic context: fluvial deposit

Habitat comments: "in a coarse buff sandstone which... varies from about 9 to 31 feet in thickness... The Rock Bench quarry beds are composed chiefly of coarse sands and small pebbles and flattened clay. They appear to
be a local channel deposit"
said to be a "clay-gall sandstone" (Rose 1981)

Methods
Life forms: carnivores, primates, ungulates, other large mammals, other small mammals

Sampling methods: quarry

Sample size: 1687 specimens

Museum: Princeton University, UMMP

Sampling comments: the metadata are from Jepsen (1940) except where noted, and the faunal list is from Rose (1981)
"secured by quarrying the basal three inches of the sandstone in an area totaling about three hundred square feet"
"discovered by Dr. G. L. Jepsen of Princeton University in the late 1920s" but "a small number" of fossils "are housed at the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology"
I am not able to relate the following identifications to Rose's list: Ectypodus aphronorus (Sloan 1987), Baiotomeus douglassi (Krause 1987), Mesodma pygmaea (Krause 1977), Unuchinia diaphanes (new species of Gunnell 1988), Prothryptacodon furens (Van Valen 1978), Mimotricentes subtrigonus (Van Valen 1978)
