Caverne de la Mine (lower infill)
Basic information
Sample name: Caverne de la Mine (lower infill)

Reference: B. Lauriol, E. Deschamps, L. Carrier, W. Grimm, R. Morlan, and B. Talon. 2003. Cave infill and associated biotic remains as indicators of Holocene environment in Gatineau Park (Quebec, Canada). Canadian Journal of Earth Science 40(6):789-803 [ER 3220]
Geography
Country: Canada

State: Quebec

Coordinate: 45° 28' 18" N, 75° 51' 0" W
Coordinate basis: stated in text

Time interval: Holocene

Section: 3220

Unit number: 2

Unit order: above to below

Max Ma: 0.00817

Min Ma: 0.005742

Age basis: radiocarbon (uncalibrated)

Geography comments: "within the Gatineau Park limits"
"Three radiocarbon dates were obtained from pieces of charcoal" in the fossiliferous strata, i.e., "8170 ± 60 years BP (TO-7767), 6825 ± 70 years BP (TO-6855) and 5742 ± 120 years BP (TO-6854)" (presumed to be uncalibrated because errors are symmetrically distributed)

Environment
Lithology: sandstone

Taphonomic context: bird accumulation,cave

Habitat comments: fossils are from strata I through III in Unit 4 at the top of the lower infill, which consists "mainly of silt and sand of a brownish colour" with fewer "fine particles" in higher levels (suggesting a dominant sandstone lithology)
"Some" of the animals "lived and died in the cave or that tumbled in and perished there" and others "probably represent animals that were consumed by avian predators" with no apparent mammalian predation

Methods
Life forms: carnivores,rodents,other small mammals,snails

Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash

Sample size: 1005 specimens

Sampling comments: "The material was excavated using a garden towel" and "brought to the lab for bulk sieving"
at least four species of bats are present and only Eptesicus fuscus is broken out, so bats are omitted
