Ugljevik
Basic information
Sample name: Ugljevik

Sample aka: Bogutovo Selo

Reference: A. A. van de Weerd, H. de Bruijn, W. Wessels, and Z. Markovic. 2022. New late Oligocene rodent faunas from the Pannonian basin. Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments 102:465-492 [ER 3964]
Geography
Country: Bosnia and Herzegovina

Coordinate: 44° 39' 49" N, 18° 59' 5" E
Coordinate basis: based on nearby landmark

Time interval: Late Oligocene

Ma: 26

Age basis: zone

Geography comments: most or all of the material is specifically from the Bogutovo Selo coal mine, also called the Ugljevik coal mine (basis of coordinate)
the fauna is shown in Fig. as roughly equivalent to MP27 through MP29, but this is nowhere discussed and an approximate date of 26 Ma based on biochronology is stated

Environment
Lithology: coal

Taphonomic context: bird accumulation,lake deposit

Habitat comments: "The 2004– 2005 rodent collection was made from the centre part of the main coal seam; the few rodents collected in 2018 are from the top of the main coal seam"
the coal is thought to represent a "marsh"
"The dominating Deperetomys calefactus is primarily represented by skull and mandible remains suggesting that this hamster lived within the marsh itself. Other rodents are very rare and mainly represented by isolated teeth which may have been brought in by birds of prey"

Methods
Life forms: rodents

Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash

Sample size: 223 specimens

Years: 2004, 2005, 2018

Sampling comments: "discovered by Zoran Marković during 1993 in the cellar of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade in brown coal used for heating of the museum... The Bogutovo Selo mine near Ugljevik was visited during 2004 and 2005, and rodents were collected from the middle part of the main coal seam"
many of the rodents were collected by visual inspection of hand-split "coal lumps" but "In addition, 200 to 300 kg of promising coal lumps" were screenwashed
lagomorphs are absent and insectivores are not discussed
Cadurcotherium and Anthracotherium are present in the mine, but from unknown levels and possibly not from the main coal seam
