Basic information
Sample name: Mafai Forest

Sample aka: Kondoa Irangi Hills

Geography
Country: Tanzania

Coordinate: 4° 50' S, 35° 55' E
Coordinate basis: stated in text as range

Geography comments: "The Mafai forest has an area of 1700 ha and rises steeply to an altitude of about 2200 m from the low-lying Maasai plains located around 1200 m above sea level"

Environment
Habitat: tropical/subtropical dry broadleaf forest

Substrate: ground surface

Disturbance: selective logging

MAT: 21.2

MAP: 848.0

Habitat comments: "a dry forest which seems originally to have been a Podocarpus forest.. the forest has suffered dramatically from deforestation and selective removal of Podocarpus trees... mean annual rainfall of 600–800 mm... in this high altitude forest it probably exceeds 1000 mm. The rainy season is from late November to May, and alternates with a six-month period of drought"
MAT is for Kondoa town (1350 m) and MAP is for Haubi mission (1670 m) and are from Eriksson et al. (1999, Journal of Paleolimnology)

Site area: 1.08

Sampling methods: line transect

Sample size: 441 individuals

Years: 1994

Seasons: dry,wet or monsoon

Size min: 10

Basal area: 66.56

Sampling comments: "The vegetation and structure data used in this study were collected in April 1997, December 1997 and June 1998. Sampling was conducted in five transects with a total of twenty-seven 20 m × 20 m plots. From transect 1 where the logging was done much earlier than in other transects, seven plots were sampled. Transects 2 and 3 included four plots each. Transect 4 had three plots, whereas transect 5 had nine plots. The latter transect is in a part of the forest which has been disturbed recently, and logging was in progress at the time the survey was carried out"
