Basic information
Sample name: Rians
Reference: M. Godinot. 1980. Les mammifères de Rians (Éocène inférieur, Provence). Palaeovertebrata 10(2):43-126 [ER 4039]
Geography
Country: France
Coordinate: 43° 37' N, 5° 46' E
Coordinate basis: based on nearby landmark
Formation: Sables Bleutés
Time interval: Early Eocene
Zone: MP7
Geography comments: "Rians est situé à une trentaine de kilomètres au nord-est d'Aix-en-Provence" and the site is "trois kilomètres à l'est du village de Rians" (coordinate based on Rians)
from the Sables Bleutés formation
"Sparnacian... situated at the Dormaal reference-level, at the base of the early Eocene... equivalent to the late Clarkforkian" (and therefore MP7)

Environment
Lithology: sandstone
Habitat comments: there is no exact description of the lithology, but the outcrop is indicated as a sandstone in Fig. 1
Methods
Life forms: bats,carnivores,primates,rodents,ungulates,other small mammals
Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash
Sample size: 189 specimens
Years: 1964, 1967, 1977
Sampling comments: the site was discovered in 1964 by J. Dufour during a geological map survey, collected by L. Ginsburg in 1967, described in a preliminary publication by Ginsburg et al. (1967), and collected again in 1977 by D. E. Russell
most of the specimens are from one site that is 50 m across, but some are from a second about 150 m away
this sample represents the first locality: the second only yielded one specimen each of Ailuravinae indet. and Paschatherium russelli
numerous turtles were described by de Broin (1977)
"Plusieurs tonnes de sédiment" was screenwashed
most of the material is in the MNHN in Paris, but some is at the University of Göttingen and the Collection Braillon
