Geography comments: The mammal assemblage of “Canale delle Acque Alte” is a Late Pleistocene-Holocene fauna which was collected from an uninterrupted stratigraphical sequence in the Acque Alte Channel, in the Latina Province of the Lazio region, Italy.
The peaty layers D-E3 are attributed to MIS4. The middle two of these layers (E1 and E2) have been radiocarbon dated to around 58,000 BP.

Environment
Lithology: peat
Archaeology: stone tools
Habitat comments: Eleven layers have been identified from the channel sequence. "Layer E was divided into three sublayers based on different plant associations: E1 - Peat with Carpinus betulus, Abies alba, Taxus baccata, etc; E2 - Peat with Quercus robur subsp. sessiliflora, Carpinus betulus, Fagus sylvatica etc; E3 - Peat with Vitis vinifera, Cornus mas, Prunus spinosa etc". All three sublayers contained a "Mousterian industry of the Pontinian type". Similarly, Layer D consists of "peat and floated woods", with "rich amounts of Abies, Corylus and Quercus pedunculata".
"As the peaty beds of layers E1, E2, and E3 are distinguished only on the basis of their plant content and are barren in fossil bones, they were grouped with Layer D".

Methods
Life forms: carnivores,ungulates
Sampling methods: quarry
Sample size: 80 specimens
Sampled by: A. C. Blanc
Years: 1935
Sampling comments: "The Acque Alte Channel was excavated in 1935. The paleontological collection is now housed at the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa. All specimens were categorized, level by level, using standard taphonomic parameters, which were used to calculate the relative frequency of the taxa".
"Blanc (1935; 1957) affirm that part of the fossils were recovered in situ, while others were found in the channel. Specifically, 159 bear a tag stating a generic provenance from “Canale Mussolini”, while other tags report the layer of find. Features in common with the specimens collected in situ (e.g., state of conservation, kind of fossilization, colour and concretions) allowed for tentative stratigraphical repositioning of the untagged specimens".
